The Scope of Burn Injuries in the United States
Burn injuries are far more common than most people realize. According to the American Burn Association’s 2025 Burn Injury Summary Report, there were 32,993 burn center admissions across the United States in 2024, with 162,799 cases recorded from 2020 to 2024 across 114 burn centers in 38 states and the District of Columbia.
A 2024 study published in the Journal of Burn Care and Research estimates that approximately 600,000 individuals annually suffer a burn injury that requires emergency care in the United States.
According to the National Safety Council’s Injury Facts, in 2024 alone there were 3,920 civilian fire deaths and 11,780 civilian fire injuries across the country. Burn injuries do not happen only in fires. Scalds, chemical exposure, electrical accidents, and contact with hot surfaces are all common causes that frequently involve the negligence of another person or entity.
Understanding Burn Injuries in Arizona
What Is a Burn Injury?
A burn injury occurs when the skin and underlying tissue are damaged by heat, chemicals, electricity, or radiation. Burns range in severity from minor surface irritation to catastrophic, life-threatening damage affecting multiple organ systems. When a burn results from someone else’s negligence, you have the right to pursue compensation for your losses.
Types of Burns
- First-Degree Burns
Affect only the outer layer of skin (the epidermis). These burns often cause redness, tenderness, and mild swelling, similar to a sunburn. Most first-degree burns heal within 3 to 7 days and usually do not leave permanent scarring. - Second-Degree Burns
Damage both the outer layer of skin and the layer underneath (the dermis). These burns commonly cause blistering, intense pain, swelling, and possible scarring. Healing time can range from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the depth and severity of the burn. - Third-Degree Burns
Destroy all layers of the skin and may extend into deeper tissue. The burned area can appear white, charred, leathery, or blackened. Third-degree burns typically require skin grafts or surgery and may take several months to years to heal fully, often leaving permanent scarring and nerve damage. - Fourth-Degree Burns
The most severe type of burn injury, extending beyond the skin into muscle, tendons, and even bone. These catastrophic injuries are often life-threatening and can require multiple surgeries, amputations, and long-term rehabilitation. Recovery may take many months or years, and some injuries result in permanent disability. - Chemical Burns
Caused by exposure to dangerous chemicals such as acids, alkalis, solvents, or industrial cleaning agents. These burns can continue damaging tissue until the chemical is removed and treated properly. Healing may take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the substance and depth of the injury. - Electrical Burns
Result from contact with electrical current or high-voltage equipment. Even when surface injuries appear minor, electrical burns can cause severe internal damage to muscles, nerves, and organs. Recovery often takes weeks to several months, especially when surgery, nerve treatment, or rehabilitation is required.
Common Causes of Burn Injuries
Common Causes of Burn Injuries
Many serious burn injuries result from someone else’s negligence. Common causes we handle include:
- Workplace accidents involving flammable materials, chemical exposure, or faulty equipment
- Defective or dangerous consumer products, including appliances, children’s sleepwear, and electrical devices which may give rise to a catastrophic injury claim
- Residential and commercial fires caused by landlord negligence or code violations
- Car accidents, truck accidents, or motorcycle accidents that cause fires or explosions
- Restaurant and food service accidents involving hot liquids or surfaces
- Chemical plant or industrial facility explosions
- Negligent supervision of children around fire, stoves, or hot water
Your Legal Rights in Arizona
Statute of Limitations
Under A.R.S. Section 12-542, you generally have two years from the date of your burn injury to file a personal injury claim in Arizona. For product liability claims, you also have two years from the date of injury. Do not wait. Evidence degrades, witnesses become harder to locate, and missing the deadline can permanently bar your right to compensation.
Proving Negligence
To succeed in a burn injury case, your legal team must establish four elements:
- The defendant owed you a duty of care
- That duty was breached through negligent or reckless conduct
- The breach directly caused your burn injury
- Your injury resulted in measurable damages
Arizona also follows a comparative negligence rule, meaning that even if you are found partially at fault, you may still recover compensation reduced by your percentage of responsibility.
Compensation: What You May Be Entitled To
A successful burn injury claim can help cover a wide range of losses, including:
- Emergency medical treatment, surgery, and hospitalization
- Skin grafts, reconstructive procedures, and ongoing wound care
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Psychological counseling and mental health treatment
- Lost wages and loss of future earning capacity
- Permanent disfigurement and scarring
- Pain and suffering
- Home modifications required by disability
- Wrongful death damages if the burn proved fatal
