Question: What is the difference between nursing home abuse and neglect?
Teri M. Rowe: Nursing home abuse and neglect a lot of times are used interchangeably. Effectively abuse is any negligent any actor on mission that’s negligent and that causes harm to a patient or resident. Neglect is essentially the failure to provide services to meet the need of the patient or the resident that also causes harm. Ultimately you know the legal definitions are what really distinguish the two but in every case that involves nursing home abuse and neglect we’re really talking about harm usually by a healthcare provider or by another person to someone vulnerable who is unable to protect themselves from that harm.
